Limousin The Limousin is a patchwork landscape of green fields and pastures, home to the famous Limousin cattle, interspersed with forests, lakes and rivers, much sought after for their trout and salmon fishing. The capital, Limoges, is famous for its fine porcelain and ceramics, whilst the area is also renowned for its enamels, manufactured here since the 17th century. On the route of St James of Compostella, with many places of pilgrimage, such as Eymoutiers and St Germain Les Belles, the Limousin is rich in medieval history with many chateaux, such as those of Brie, Rochechouart, Chalus and Montbrum dating from the struggles of the Hundred Years War. There is much to see and do in this beautiful region, perfect too for rest and relaxation, whilst rich varied local produce, beef, lamb, trout, wild mushrooms, wonderful cheeses and fruit from the orchards make for a memorable gastronomic tradition. |
