Périgord Noir The Périgord Noir at the heart of the Dordogne, has a long and fascinating history stretching from prehistoric man, who left wonderful cave paintings in Lascaux and elsewhere, as well as many artefacts now in the National Prehistoric Museum in Les Eyzies. Its more recent history, notably the turbulent transfer from English to French rule during the Hundred Years War has left the landscape dotted with literally hundreds of cliff and hilltop châteaux and “bastides” with breathtaking views over the surrounding countryside and river below. Here you can hire a boat and admire the picturesque waterside villages at the pace of the gentle current, stopping for a picnic or a swim as the mood takes you. The region’s capital, Sarlat, with its golden-bricked medieval houses provides a fitting backdrop for the annual drama festival and for the colourful market each Saturday. Places of Interest Périgord Noir - Sarlat with its annual drama festival & Saturday market; bastide towns such as Domme; picturesque riverside villages such as Beynac and La Roque Gageac; prehistoric caves at Lascaux & Les Eyzies; the chateau of Hautefort; Périgueux with its old town.
