When in the Alps...

Gastronomy

Red Gamay and white Apremont and Chignin are among the choice wines. Food is robust, focusing on meat, sausage, potatoes and cheeses like Beaufort, Reblochon and Tomme de Savoie. Expect fondue aplenty, tartiflette (potatoes in melted cheese) and possibly meat cooked on a 'table barbecue'. Try Grolle, a liqueur coffee drunk from a many-spouted wooden pot.

Places of Interest

Take the spectacular cable car trip from Chamonix up to the Aiguille du Midi and see majestic Mont Blanc. Ride the panoramic rack railway to the Mer de Glace glacier. Visit the picturesque town of Annecy, set beside a turquoise lake, or explore any number of delightful Alpine villages; you may even wish to cross the border into Switzerland.

Sports and Leisure

Tennis courts and swimming pools are found in many towns; cycle and mountain bike hire is widely available to. Go summer skiing on the Grand Motte glacier in Tignes or in Val d'Isère. Golf courses include Golf de Flaine des Carroz (18 hole) and Golf du Lac d'Annecy. Mountaineering, canyoning and rock climbing may interest the more intrepid. A number of festivals may be found throughout the summer.

Crisp, clear mountain air combined with warm summer sunshine make for an invigorating climate, perfect for an active holiday and sports of all descriptions, set against a backdrop of mountain slopes bursting with wild flowers and snow capped peaks.
